MEETING OF DECEMBER 21, 2000

By Carew McFall

JERRY MOISON's thought for the day was to thank everyone who serves. Be kind and give without remembering. FDR thanked everyone - when he chartered a train, he would always thank the engineer, the conductor, and the porter. Magic words -Thank you. JERRY made an offhand remark about 1,000 turkeys. It turns out that he and his brother, Bill, asked for donations, hoping that with their matching funds to give 500 turkeys. The money poured in, so, with their matching dollars they could buy 1,000 turkeys. Together with the fixings donated by friends, 1,000 Christmas dinners will be distributed to the poor. I say "thank you", and I think the whole club will feel that way.

We all lit the candles on our cupcake, (prepared by President GINNY LEAR), the lights went off, and we sang "Happy Birthday" to JOE O'TOOLE on his 81st birthday. JOE stood and acknowledged the cheers, saying, about Louise at his side, 'I married a very sweet girl". As JOE knows, Louise is a lot more than a sweet girl. Early on, long before they set up their successful insurance business, her desk was just outside of Hewlett's office. Either Packard or Hewlett would put a device on her desk, asking how much will it cost to manufacture this? She could tell them.

Many spouses were introduced-- something like 18.

Rotary's Rose Parade float, to which each of us is contributing $2 from the Club's budget, will be decorated with 12 Camp RYLA graduates, one from our Camp RYLA.

Many of our members gave at least $200 this year to the Rotary Foundation: DICK DUHRING, MARGE BRUNO, VICTORIA EMMONS, PAT FARRELL, CURTIS COLE, WILL CORKERN, STEVE GRUBER, GINNY LEAR, DICK HASENPFLUG, DICK HENNING, RUDY LIGTELYN, SETH MANNING, JOHN SYLVESTER, MEL KAHN, SAM PESNER, LEE LYNCH, PAUL NYBERG, MARY PROCHNOW, JERRY MOISON, HARRIET HEEBINK, CINDY LUEDTKE, DAN O'DONNELL, GARY ROSS, MARY MARLEY, MIKE SCHNEIDER, and JOHN MOSS.

BOB RAYL got his blue badge and a standing ovation.

Ten have joined our club since July 1: LOWELL FORTE, ROB HOLDEN, SHELLY POTVIN, CINDIE EBERHARDT, BRIAN WARD, ELLEN YAMANE, LUCY RASMUSSEN, JOAN ROSSELLE, DAMON SCHECHTER, and JAN SCHROEDER.

WYATT ALLEN was thanked for collecting the lunch money and JOHN SYLVESTER won the auction of a Stanford-Cal checkers game.

Birthdays cost fines for the following members: KRIS CASTO, DICK HASSENPFLUG, SAM PESNER, JERRY MOISON, BEN MC GANN, FRANCIS LA POLL, JOE O'TOOLE, NELS BURDETT (who said he was 3 years younger than O'TOOLE) and MARLENE COWAN (there with her son and daughter).

Anniversaries also cost: DON HULL (who joined the President's Club), BEN MC GANN, AND MONA ARMISTEAD (who gave a dollar for each of 35 years),

DOROTHY PONTON confessed that going to the airport made her miss ringing the bell for the Salvation Army downtown. She joined the President's Club.

GEORGE PERHAM saw that the Teen Home in East Palo Alto lacked a Christmas tree. He asked at the Kiwanis Christmas tree lot and they gave him a nice one. Thanks GEORGE and Kiwanis.

CINDY LUEDTKE asked for volunteers to tutor at the Teen Home, especially for math and chemistry.

ED SOX invited us to join other Rotarian bikers who leave from TOM MOONEY's gas station every Saturday morning at 8 a.m. for a two or three hour ride.

PAT FARRELL, president of the Los Altos Sister City Committee, invited us to their dinner at the Garden House, January 25 at 6:30 p.m., and JOHN SYLVESTER will be one of the entertainers.

DICK HENNING invited us to join him and other Rotarians for a trip to Chile
this spring.

You are also invited to hear the Rotary International president, Frank Devlyn, who is from Mexico, at a dinner at the San Jose Doubletree Hotel, January 3. Our Rotary Aids Committee will have a booth at the Rotary Convention in San Antonio.

SHELLY POTVIN asked for cell phones to be given to battered women. The phones will be programmed to reach 911 quickly.

BEN OSBORNE's guest was his attractive 12-year old daughter who won the Arizona Diamondback award for the best middle school student in Arizona. She plays the violin, sings in a chorus, and is on swimming and soccer teams. She will get to meet all the Diamondback players.

Our program was beautiful singing by 21 of Los Altos High School's famous Main Street Singers who looked so fine in their black tux or formal dress. During their 15 years they have given over 175 concerts in 47 countries--next going to Costa Rica, Panama and Cuba. Ours was their 53rd domestic concert this season. Credit for this great group goes to their leader, Mark Andrew Shaull, and their piano accompan- ist, Virginia Hebel. We were asked to become sponsors, joining hundreds of businesses and patrons from this region. Thanks for the memorable concert!

Twenty-six Rotarians took part in the Salvation Army bell ringing this year at Second and Main Streets. We don't know the total for the week yet, but already the initial results show that we will raise a lot more than last year. Those who helped out included: HARRIET HEEBINK, PAT MILLAR, JOHN MOSS, ED SOX, WYATT ALLEN, BILLY RUSSELL, DAN O'DONNELL, JACK HEIDMILLER, PAUL NYBER, FRANCIS LAPOLL, BOB ADAMS, GEORGE PERHAM, MEL KAHN, GINNY LEAR, JULIE ROSE, ALEX NG, BEN MCGANN, BOO BUE, BUD OLIVER, DICK DUHRING, LAYNE LONG, CINDY LUEDTKE, MICHAEL SCHNEIDER, STEVE ANDERSON, SAM PESNER, AND HIS SON, BRIAN PESNER.

President's Message

One of Jerry Moison's four key words in his thought for the day, generosity, is in grand supply in our club. Through your timely financial generosity, we honored our three servers today with more than $1100, as a holiday gift. They are extremely appreciative, and said how much they enjoy working for us since we moved to Garden House four years ago. (Thanks to Past Pres. George Perham) We also gave much to the Community Services Agency this season, through your gifts of cash, toys, books, and clothing, and through our Holiday Party fund, thanks to the generosity of Father Bill Rewak, 100 bicycle helmets and locks, and funding for food. We are generous with our time, this week in our bell ringing downtown for the Salvation Army. Thank you to Steve Gruber for arranging that schedule, and to all those who jingled bells.

We are generous in our friendship to each other as we celebrate special birthdays with an energetic person, like Joe O'Toole. Also, as we offer support to Marlene Cowan, Ruth Lundquist, and Billy Russell with whom we share many fond memories, as they face new challenges this holiday season, with the loss of their dear spouses this year. And we send our support to long-time friends, Barbara Emory and her family, with the passing this week of Past Los Altos Rotary President Tom Emory. Tom's memorial service will be held December 30, at 2 p.m., at Christ Episcopal Church in Los Altos.

Thank you all for all that you do for your Los Altos Rotary Club, your community, and your world, through our many projects and programs. With the Main Street Singers sending us off so beautifully into the holiday season, how can we not anticipate a Happy New Year!

See you Thursday, January 4, 2001.
Ginny
